Description

This position, will work with the Directors of the State Government Relations (SGR) group to analyze and understand relevant higher risk public policy and business issues at the state and local government level, identify and anticipate state legislative and regulatory policy developments and their impact on Cargill, effectively advocate for Cargill's interests before state and local government authorities.

50% Government Relations — Working with SGR Directors, monitor, evaluate, develop execution strategy, and advocate on proposed legislation and regulations, including working with other stakeholders in proactively advancing legislation and regulations, utilizing input from Cargill Enterprises and external trade/industry groups.

20% Delegations/External Visitors/Events — Draft correspondence to secure professional meetings with visitors; draft and coordinate preparation of briefing materials for executives and senior management, lead logistics and planning of orientations, meetings, and other events for visitors and hosts, archive past visitor information and update databases and statistics, lead and organize administrative tasks involving preparing gifts, arranging photos and preparing thank you letters.

20% Relationship Building - Develop and maintain strategic relationships between Cargill representatives and state and local government officials and trade organizations.

10% Event/Meeting Invitations — Manage the coordination of all operations relating to Cargill's participation in external stakeholder events (e.g., lunches, dinners, receptions, conferences). Work with businesses and functions to prepare briefing materials to ensure Cargill participants are adequately apprised of relevant Cargill issues and provided with talking points, when appropriate. Working with admin assistants to handle logistics

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Minimum three (3) years in government relations or public advocacy setting

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with key stakeholders and various constituencies

  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of government relations

  • Ability to communicate effectively, persuasively, tactfully and positively in both oral and written forms

  • Excellent writing and verbal skills and experience in preparing advocacy tools for both internal and external audiences, such as Q&A, position statements, emails, articles, etc.

  • Ability to work autonomously but with the ability to know when to ask for help/advice.

  • Ability and willingness to travel within the U.S.; on occasion, the travel can be significant.

  • Capable of managing/motivating others without direct reporting lines

  • Strategic problem solver able to take initiative within a large organization

  • Ability to use industry-related technologies (e.g., legislation tracking software, grassroots communication software)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, political science, or related degree

  • Event planning knowledge and experience

  • Experience working in a corporate government relations function
