Position Purpose & Summary

The Senior Scientist Sensory
Position is part of the Cargill R&D team in North America. Innovation in finished products utilizing Cargill's Food Ingredients and Protein business product portfolios requires in depth sensory expertise. This position will provide key technical sensory support to a growing set of customer projects in Sensory Applications. The position reports to the R&D Sensory leader for North America and is part of the R&D Shared Capabilities team.

This is a key technical leadership position in sensory technology working closely with R&D, Consumer insights, and Marketing teams in the protein business. An in depth knowledge of advanced sensory evaluation techniques including but not limited to consumer and difference testing, focus groups, descriptive analysis, along with statistical sensory data analysis will be key for this role.

Principal Accountabilities

50% Sensory Project Management and Customer Collaboration

  • Align with Global R&D team strategy as well as protein business needs and priorities and deliver results that enable the business to succeed.

  • Collaborate effectively with the NA sensory team members based in other locations outside Wichita

  • Apply advanced sensory and technical knowledge to drive projects for retail, food service and protein ingredient businesses within the Protein platform.

  • Apply technical expertise to product development, quality control, consumer insights (CI) teams by using appropriate sensory methodologies (consumer panels, focus groups, difference panels, descriptive analysis, shelf life testing)

  • Understand the latest sensory methods and bring new ideas forward to the R&D and CI, Marketing teams, Cargill businesses and customers within the Protein platform.

  • Independently conduct all phases of sensory testing, identify, plan, design both qualitative and quantitative sensory studies and analyze, interpret and report findings. Effectively communicate sensory results and recommend actionable next steps to various internal and external customer teams

  • Effectively manage sensory calendar and project timelines to meet internal and external customer timelines and expectations

  • Provide direction and mentor/coach team members as appropriate

  • Conduct research following Cargill's food safety and health & safety policies

30% Sensory Project Design and Execution

  • Assist FSQR teams to develop effective sensory programs

  • Work closely with different customer plant personnel and provide specific training on product evaluation and/or use of the specific ballot as needed.

  • Partner with Consumer Insights teams and consumer research agencies to design and field consumer research tests across all regions in the US.

  • Act as a consultant for key Customers and provide capability presentations designed specifically for their needs.

  • Use sensory data collection software to design sensory studies

  • Document all work using electronic lab notebooks and tracking software systems. Protect this information as required by company policy

  • Able and willing to work on product development using novel and/or non GRAS ingredients

20% Innovation, Project Improvement and Sensory Team Support

  • Identify innovative new approaches related to sensory science, statistical analysis, product and ingredient development

  • Assist in improving and effectiveness of the sensory program and project management

  • Mentor junior team members in designing, executing and report writing

  • Independently manage the Consumer Employee panel database and help promote participation.

  • Assist the Sensory Leader in managing external sensory services and advance current sensory testing capabilities

  • Create IP to help Cargill capture value from innovation

  • Participate on CTES sensory team work.

Qualifications

Required

  • BSc in Food Science or science/related field (examples: Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Nutrition), etc.)

  • 5 years' technical experience in the food and beverage industry

  • 2 years' experience in sensory science

  • Ability to understand and interpret qualitative and quantitative sensory data and statistical analysis

  • Ability to communicate technical details to wide array of people and project teams

  • Basic understanding of sensory data collection systems (SIMS, Compusense or EyeQuestion)

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and lead sensory projects across teams

  • Excellent verbal, communication, prioritization, report writing (e.g. Microsoft) and presentation skills

  • Ability to work independently as well as with teams

  • Ability to travel up to 15%

Preferred

  • MSc in Food Science or related field with an emphasis in sensory science

  • 5 years of experience working in the sensory field with finished products or food ingredients

  • Experience in designing, executing and interpreting consumer panels

  • Experience in recruiting, training and managing descriptive panel

  • Experience in using sensory data collection software (SIMS. Compusense, or EyeQuestion)

  • Experience working and/or training plant employees

  • Experience working with third party testing agencies

  • Experience in Focus groups, one-on-one interviews, Concept testing, Turf Analysis, Conjoint Analysis

  • Experience in using statistical software to analyze sensory data

  • Project Management experience

  • 2-3 years in product and ingredient development
