DIU on call is primarily responsible for execution of approved protocols for animal nutrition in an accurate and timely fashion. Position will support the Innovation Units by filling in various positions and shifts, as well as dedicated responsibilities (i.e. light maintenance). Position will assist in conducting research trials and collecting data including animal weighing, feeding, and collection per protocol, milking and mixing feed. Position also will be responsible for providing standard animal husbandry and housekeeping duties as well as role in equipment maintenance/ repair and processing. Position will be approximately 20 hours per week, varying hours depending on unit needs. Operating hours are from 5am-9pm.

  • 80% Animal Production and Research
    • Milking and/or movement of animals
    • Feeding and Stall Comfort/Cleaning
    • Basic computer skilled to enter/transfer data into computerized program (i.e. milk wts., animal/feed weights)
    • Equipment operation - Bobcat, forklift, feed carts, mixers (with training)
    • Animal observations/disease recognition/documentation
    • Accurate data collection and documentation
    • Quality assurance, Standard Operational Procedures (SOP) & protocol compliance
  • 10% Animal/Lab Specific
    • Injections & Treatments
    • Reproduction - Calving/Farrowing/Breeding/Heat detection
    • Ventilation & Animal Environment
    • Rumen sampling/infusions
    • Sample collections (blood, organ, feces)
    • Power washing (room sterilization)
    • Maintenance program
    • Conducts assigned operator maintenance on equipment
  • 10% Housekeeping
    • Facilities as assigned
    • As observed and needed
    • Any other duties as assigned



  • Experience in animal husbandry, large animal preferred
  • Ability to learn animal sampling procedures
  • Work with a team and communicate effectively (written and orally)
  • Pass specified physical to meet physical labor requirements
  • Demonstrate willingness to learn from others
  • Maintain a safe, clean working environment
  • Receive and execute direction from leadership in written and oral form
  • Be able to work independently and with our team with minimal guidance (after training)
  • Be present during scheduled work hours
  • Ability to work early mornings and later evenings(starting at 5am, and nights ending at 9pm)
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule as needs require


  • Basic computer work, excel and Dairy comp
  • Research experience (any species/form)
  • Large equipment operation experience
