This position will help take Cargill's Ocean Transportation (OT) presence in West Coast of the Americas market to a new level, building on the foundations that have put in place in the last 5 years to become one of the premier operators on the West Coast. We have all the ingrediants to achieve this further growth in terms of market opportunity, a supportive management with a tested strategy and a highly motivated Go To Market presence which holds many of the critical relationships already. The ideal candidate will add to this mix an excellent spot market read and ability to recognize and execute on medium term opportunities that arise. This will require an individual with a strong risk appetite and someone who enjoys taking decisions and testing themselves in a challenging and rewarding market. An ability to analyze the overall value of a trade is also critical as cargo parcelling will be a major part of the day to day business, trades that require a nuanced approach which goes beyond the flat price in order to extract the maximum value from them. Regular travel to meet customers will be requisite to success in the role.

Principal Accountabilities

35% - Execute on the desk/customer gameplan in the spot market bold and timely while always complying with the Cargill vessel vetting policy and gathering market insights from brokers.

Working within the team to optimize the cashbook, maximizing earnings for the Cargill OT fleet.

Sets regional game plans based on strong snd analysis ultimately to meeting volume targets and generate desk PnL

Has strong focus on execution, making sure desk plans are translated into reality

30% - Build strong customer relationships (for target customers and strategic routes) and complete the account management disciplines. Also build/maintain relationships with internal stakeholders including admin/vessel ops/accounting.

10% - Champion regional Supply & Demand and specialize in a strategic flow to provide insights and contribute to the overall desk trading game plan.Undertake freight market S&D analysis to assist in market reading helping to anticipate market moves and maximize opportunities both for ourselves and the customers we serve.

10% - Actively connect and collaborate with other Business Units to identify and drive business growth opportunities.

Working closely with internal product lines to provide them with value added market insights and positioning advice, rating their demand, creating freight opportunities for them, managing their freight position on spot/short term basis and providing optimal logistic solutions.

15% - Work in close collaboration with all OT departments (operations, admin, accounting, risk, credit) and ensure all administrative tasks are completed in a timely manner.

• Bachlors degree in business, finance, analytics, enginering or equivalent experience.

• 3 years shipping/trading experience with proven skills in analysis, risk/reward, timing, bold execution and customer focus in freight and/or other commodities.

• Customer focus and engagement skills - ability to represent Cargill and OT internally and externally

• Commercial expertise - appetite for and interest in commercial risk taking and risk management

• Resilient negotiation skills

• Strong relationship management and interpersonal skills

• Good problem solving and decision-making ability

• In depth understanding of basic risk management tools

• Strong written and verbal communication skills (English)


• Post graduate degree in related field (i.e. MBA, Masters in Finance, Engineering, ect.)

• 3-5 year relevant industry experience

• Account management skills

• Solid commodity knowledge, preferably in minerals/concentrates

• Fluency in Spanish a plus

• Good understanding of various charter party and voyage terms and conditions

• Experienced in making voyage calculations
